Global educational leaders gathered in Washington, D.C., for a two-day summit to discuss the future of universities and explore innovative teaching and management methods amidst global challenges in higher education.
The Institute for Global Higher Education at Duke Kunshan University and Duke Learning Innovation & Lifetime Education partnered to organize the New Global Universities Summit, which also served as the Institute’s global debut and the beginning of a number of collaborations with Duke LILE.
The New Global Universities Summit
The New Global Universities Summit is an invitation-only gathering of founders and current leaders of universities that have been launched in the last 25 years. The Summit will begin with an evening reception on Wednesday, June 26, 2024 and run through lunch on Friday, June 28, 2024.
Participants include a remarkable group of founders, presidents, and provosts from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America, and the Middle East. A full list of current registrants is available on the Attendees page.
DKU Chancellor Yaolin Liu, Duke University Provost Alec Gallimore, DKU Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Scott MacEachern, and founders and leaders of universities from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, North America and the Middle East exchanged insights about starting and managing new universities and discussed initiatives that aim to provide high-quality education.
Participants also discussed why they founded new universities, what they’ve learned about providing top-notch education, and how mutual learning can help newer and more established institutions.
The summit’s topics aligned with themes from the book The New Global Universities: Reinventing Education in the 21st Century, written by Bryan Penprase and Noah Pickus, the dean for academic strategy and learning innovation, director of IGHE at DKU, and associate provost at Duke.
“The Summit validated our belief that there is a wave of innovative new universities all over the world,” said Pickus, “and that there is a hunger among their leaders to learn from each other and to build a global movement to increase access and deepen quality at the same time. The Summit positions the IGHE to nurture this movement by drawing on the strengths of Duke and DKU together.”
The summit featured bold new educational initiatives and aimed to produce a report with insights from the summit discussions as a guide for educators starting their own new educational institutions or leaders striving to revitalize their existing ones.
